Speaking of modernity... Dubai is an absolute champion when it comes to combining tradition with the latest inventions.

So many people have told me in the past year "I would go to Dubai, but in the UAE you can't dress nicely..."

I admit that I understand them completely. I try to be as opened as possible about one particular fact... I like to look like a THOT. I'm curvy and I love to show it, I like bright colors and I do like to stand out. Therefore, I'd like to share with all of my fellow THOTs my secret to how to dress appropriately, while still feeling stylish and sexy, in Dubai.

I should probably start by telling you that I myself was a little nervous when going to the Middle East for the first time. Although, I was going there with my best friend, who's dad lives there and she knows the place perfectly, I still had to do tons of research before heading to the city of gold. Frankly, I really didn't learn much. Most videos and articles I have found were either one extreme or the other. You either cover up completely, to the point where only your face and hands can see daylight, or you forget about the social norms and accept the subtle judgment from the public. I wanted to be somewhere in the middle.

So in order to find the center, let's see a few things you might want to be aware about when it comes to fashion in the UAE.

1. Religion

Islam is the official religion (that should not be a surprise). Most of the citizens are Muslim, which translates to being very modest when it comes to clothing. To put it simply don't show your shoulders, knees, belly, tits or back

2. Climate

One of the things that worried me the most was "How I'm going to survive being all covered up in such a hot country". Personally, I'm not very used to a very hot weatherand wasn't dure if I'd survive walking around the city in such heat. But do NOT worry. Dubai is modern enough and will take care of it. Basically, every building including the metro, has AC. In addition, you will discover why the burqas and hijabs are so popular. They give great protection from the heat and the wind.

3. Modernity

Speaking of modern... Dubai is an absolute champion when it comes to combining tradition with the latest inventions. I'm not only talking about the AC in bus stops or literally causing rain in summer, but also fashion. As you will probably notice, a lot of the people in the streets will comfortably walk around in shorts and tank tops. The truth is that the citizens of Dubai are aware of the trends from outside of their country and really don't care that much. What you don't want to do is test their patience.

4. Media shit storm

I find it a little sad when I see a clickbait title of a video saying "Kissing in Dubai BIG MISTAKE", then check out the content just to find nothing. Unfortunately, some people try to create sensation by provoking the citizens of Dubai. Who is really at fault? The media, there's so many articles entitiled "Woman arrested for showing skin". Not to mention entire movies like Sex and the City 2, which give a very negative image of the country. Whenever you stumble accross one of these titles just make sure read verify the content. The woman who got arrested was actually simply asked to cover her back, so in response she took off all of her clothes i the middle of the mall...

5. Dresscode

Naturally, just like everywhere else, the dresscode depends on the place. When you're at the pool or the beach you can do pretty much whatever you want. At the public beaches everyone is running around in their bikini without stress. However, I would not recommend going top-less. While visiting temples or any place in Old Dubai try wearing a long skirt/pants and a t-shirt, or a long dress, get a nice stylish shawl for your shoulders and you're good to go. The mall is where it gets a little complicated. Whatever the reason of your trip, Dubai mall is a must, but that's where the rules aren't that clear. What I suggest is wearing anything you're comfortable in (and walking shoes) and having a shawl, jacket, blazer or scarf in case of emergency.

6. Neighbourhood

Like any metropolitan city, Dubai can feel like many smaller cities tied into one. That's how different certain areas may feel. For instance, Old Dubai and Dubai Marina are nothing alike. Marina due to the architecture and the type of restaurants and shops might resemble New York. It is a district mostly for Western immigrants, where the rules are a lot more loose. Here you're a few meters away from the beach, and I doubt anyone would mind your clothing choices, maybe accept some bitchy Karens.

7. Fashion Capital

You might not be a huge fan of Dubai, but every tourist who will see it should agree, the city is insanely glamourous. From the people, to the architecure, everything is exceptionally stylish and simply beautiful. The Dubai fashion week is a huge event, and the designers seem to be (ironically) even more daring than in Europe.

So there you go. My experience in Dubai was amazing and I found all the citizens to be extremely tolerant and welcoming. My conlusion? Go to Dubai, have fun, and just for security always carry a shawl in your purse.

About Me

Hello! My name is Flora and it’s my goal to help others become their own version of a „world citizen”. What are my qualifications? I have spent my entire life going to international schools. I have been taught according to the British, French and Polish system. I had teachers from literally every single part of the world, some of them including Mexico, Canada, England, Australia and Algeria. I can honestly admit that in my life I have met at least one person from every country. However, I only started regularly (more than 2 countries a year) travelling at the age of 18. When my fiance moved from Paris to The Netherlands I made it my mission to visit the entire BeNeLux! We’ve done that faster than I estimated, so we started to seriously expand the horizon. Now I’m passionately sharing my adventerous, hoping you’ll be able to learn from my mistakes. Enjoy!
